Manatee Research of South Florida
Help Support Your Local Manatees!
Kit Curtin has worked as a manatee biologist in southeast Florida (Broward County, Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys) since 1987.
During this time, a variety of government agencies (U.S. Geological Survey, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resource Management – DERM) and non-profit agencies (Save the Manatee Club) have provided funding to support this position. Daily tasks have included photo-documenting distinctly-scarred manatees, tracking satellite-tagged manatees, habitat monitoring, assisting injured and entangled manatees, conducting aerial surveys, and consulting with county, state and federal wildlife managers.
Other work experience includes field studies with the New England Aquarium’s Right Whale Project from 1988-1993 and working as a dolphin trainer and manatee rehabilitator at Miami Seaquarium from 1983-1987.
Curtin received a BA in environmental Studies from Florida International University in 1992.
